Humes paints a relatively bleak picture of the juvenile justice system. Discuss the major problems that Humes identified. Then, in response to these problems, provide a brief overview of how you think the juvenile justice system could be improved.

After reading No Matter How Loud I Shout by Edward Humes, it was immediately apparent there were several issues with the LA juvenile court system.  The issues were widespread, ranging from personal child issues to social issues, and issues with the elements, structure, and functions of the criminal justice system.  One of the continuing assumptions that can be concluded from the book is how the juvenile-justice system had an inept ability to rehabilitate or prevent juvenile crime.  The book centered on how the LA juvenile court system was instituted because of the In re Gault 387 U.S. 1 (1967) Supreme Court system.  Humes (1997) identified how Gault and his friend prank-called a victim and he was arrested.  When he was arrested, he was not given a phone call and was eventually sentenced to six years in juvenile jail.  Due to the sentence, his case was appealed to the Supreme Court, citing his 14th amendment was violated.  Prior to In re Gault decisions, it was apparent that juveniles could be sentenced ……..
