Question

Provide a brief overview of Tyler’s explanation for why people obey the law.  Do you think his perspective has merit in explaining police-citizen encounters?  For example, can it explain why some people obey police orders and others do not?  Why or why not?  While responding to this question, keep in mind Gottfredson and Hirschi’s theory, where crime is purported to be the result of a psychological personality trait.

Tyler (2006) conducted a study of Chicago citizens to find empirical evidence of why people obey the law. Telephone interviews were conducted of 1575 people and follow-ups done a year later with 804 of those interviewed during the first wave. Both a cross-sectional analysis which looked at attitudes and behaviors at one point in time as well as a panel analysis which looked at changes in attitudes and behaviors at two points in time (Tyler, 2006) were done in order to contrast instrumental and normative perspectives.
