The research by Schmutte, Davidson, and O’Connell (2018) aimed at proving that improved sleep, diet, and physical exercise contributed to mental health improvement in adults with mental health issues. His study was intervention-based where the impact of a 14-week program advocating for sleep as the cornerstone for a healthy mind was monitored. The gap in research as explained by the authors is that most studies previously focused on the relationship between physical activity and mental wellbeing but none had added the aspect of improved sleep. A total of 78 participants were used in the study. The study was observational and was done in a University clinical setting upon approval by the Institution Review Board.
