I chose Child workers and African Americans as the minority groups between 1880 and 1940. Starting with the socio-economic status and challenges, child workers were a common phenomenon for many industries at the turn of the century. Corbett et al., (2021) note that children were so prevalently used as workers that National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) pushed for legislation to ban this practice. The children had long working hours, worked in dangerous conditions, and got paid comparatively low wages. The physically strenuous work also affected their health and well-being. From the social perspective, children working was seen as a counter to the “sin of idleness” and encouraging the virtue of industry (Abbott, 1908).
