Watching the documentary (The Mask You Live In) by Newsom (2015), there two main ways gender construction and expectations affected me while growing up. Primarily, I was largely confined to feminine roles just like the boys in the film felt they were tied to masculine roles. This means from the family setting, I did the ‘softer’ duties like dishes, cleaning, and generally keeping the house in order. Despite the men around helping sometimes, I always felt it was expected of me and my mother to do such roles. I was also expected to be warm, humble, considerate in general. The boys in the house on the other hand did harder duties like cutting wood and taking care of the horses.
