You can find attached two examples of high quality essays that were submitted over the last 2-3 years. These essays received marks in the “Exceptional” and “Excellent” range of the marking scheme below.

No single example can capture all the qualities we seek to reward, no single example is perfect, no single example should be taken as definitive of what a first class essay is, but these can contribute to helping you to understand the kind of work we are asking you to do, and suggest some ways in which you can do this to a high standard.

These examples are given for the purpose of illustration only.  These show one way in which the material discussed can be brought under the control of an argument and how the criteria we use when marking are applied. You should not copy or paraphrase these in your own work: to do so is to commit plagiarism, which is a very serious offence indeed. Plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity. It is a principle of intellectual honesty that all members of the academic community should acknowledge their debt to the originators of the ideas, words, or data which form the basis for their own work. Passing off another’s work as your own is not only poor scholarship, it also means that you have failed to complete the learning process. Deliberate plagiarism is unethical and can have serious consequences for your degree and your future career; it also undermines the standards of your department, your institution and of the degrees it issues.
