Broadcasters such as the BBC would argue that, in an era of abundant online disinformation and where globalized streamers predominate, public service media organisations are needed by society more than ever. Please explain, giving reasons for your answer, whether or not you agree with the view that a system of having publicly funded media remains economically justified and please evaluate whether a compulsory licence fee or any of the main alternative methods of funding (e.g. advertising, subscription or a state grant) would be the most appropriate mechanism to support public service broadcasting.

With reference to Europe’s television production industries, please analyse the case for and against protectionism and, in particular, explain whether you believe that these industries are helped or harmed by the imposition (in the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive) of compulsory quotas for minimum levels of European-made television content on broadcast channels and streaming services.
