  • The exam questions cover readings and materials assigned for the second half of the course. When answering questions, cite sources (and, where appropriate, page numbers) from the readings, notes, and any relevant, credible sources of information (e.g., research articles). There is no set amount of citations to include. Even so, your response should clearly draw on the assigned readings and notes to substantiate claims. Edit your responses for content, logic, grammar, spelling, etc. Ensure that your name is included at the top of the document. (See the exam grading rubric at the end of the syllabus.)

Question 1. Based on the readings about crime and drugs and based on the course notes: (a) What factors can shape the development of a criminal “career”? Explain how they do so. (b) What factors can influence a trajectory out of a criminal “career”? Explain how.

Question 2. Based on the readings about mental illness and based on the course notes: (a) How can society make it difficult for those who are, or are labeled, as mentally ill to be viewed as “normal”? (b) How can societal conditions (e.g., culture) contribute to mental illness?

Question 3. Based on the readings about sexuality and based on the course notes: (a) What are strategies that individuals who are—or are viewed as—deviant use to change how others see them? (b) How do these strategies help prevent stigmatization?

Question 4. Based on the readings on disabilities and homelessness and based on the course notes: (a) How can stigma affect individuals with disabilities or who are homeless? (b) How are the strategies that these individuals employ to manage stigma and to shape their identity similar to what non-deviant individuals use to manage others’ impressions of them and to forge their identity?

Question 5. Based on the readings about studying deviance and based on the course notes: (a) What are the advantages of official records data (e.g., court or agency records)? Disadvantages? (b) What are the advantages of interview and participant observation data? Disadvantages?
