Reflection on the Theory and Practice of Coaching.

In the past Module, the course teaching on the specialization in sports among children has intrigued me. As most parents feel, I have held on to the notion that the early introduction of children to a sporting activity could relate to the high achievements in the sporting competition later on in the life of a child. However, the past module has been informative as it has led me to understand the need of allowing the children to engage in multi-sports as a means of developing their competitive skills. As a coach, I will ensure that children get to participate in multi-sports and only be selective in sporting activities later on in junior high or in college life. I will encourage and enlighten parents that constant participation in sporting activities does not translate to the ultimate success in sporting activities later on in life.

As a sporting coach, I have learned that the children’s specialization in sports is retrogressive and may ultimately lead to boredom in children and eventually cause sports attrition among adolescents 13-14 years of age. I have learned that children’s participation in sports is based on the ‘fun’ in the game. Thus, I will create as much fun in the sports I coach to encourage children to participate and consistently become active in the games. I will engage with children to learn how they perceive a sport to be fun so as to fully integrate their ideas in the practice sessions. Since there is low sports participation amongst children in high schools and colleges, in my coaching practice I would encourage the adolescents to keep on participating in the sports activity not just for competition but for a lifetime fitness practice. ……..
