[Essay] AMH 2020 – Following World War Two and continuing into the present day, is the United States a nation that is mostly conformist and peaceful, or is it mostly conflict-ridden and full of turmoil?

During the past few weeks (and the next ones as well), we have studied the United States during the second half of the twentieth century and the first few years of the twenty-first. We have looked at how the United States attempted to navigate the escalating Cold War, the Vietnam Era, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of terrorism and the U.S.’s efforts to conduct a “War on Terror” around the world. At the same time, the United States dealt domestically with the start and escalation of the “culture” wars in the late-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

I want you to use your textbook, along with any primary sources from Chapters 35 – 30, to support an argument that answers ONE of the following prompts:

  • Within the field of American history, American historians have long debated the following question: Following World War Two and continuing into the present day, is the United States a nation that is mostly conformist and peaceful or is it mostly conflict-ridden and full of turmoil? You, as a professional historian, must write a paper that presents your answer to a group of high-school students who have little knowledge of U.S. history but they want to know more about the country.
  • Historians from several different fields, United States, Europe, Asia, Central and South America are interested in addressing the following question: During the Cold War and the war on terror, did the Historians from several different fields, United States, Europe, Asia, Central and South America are interested in addressing the following question: During the Cold War and the war on terror, did the United States act mostly as a force for good both at home and internationally or did it mostly act in a harmful manner, both at home and abroad? You, as a professional historian, must write a paper that presents your answer to a group of government officials who need advice about what role the U.S. government should have in both its society and in the world in 2021.
  • Historians who study gender, culture, and identity in the modern United States are interested in the answer to a different question: How has the United States tried to provide equal rights to all of its citizens in the modern era (Post World War Two) and has it succeeded or failed in doing so? You, as a professional historian, must write a paper that presents your answer to a group of non-Americans who are interested in the United States professional historian, must write a paper that presents your answer to a group of non-Americans who are interested in the United States.

Here are some tips/suggestions to help get you started:

  1. Each question offers you a “side” to chose. You must pick a side from the outset and stick to that side throughout your paper.
  2. The online readings should provide you with some excellent evidence for your arguments.
  3. You want to use this evidence to prove your argument.

Your essay will need to include a thesis statement that addresses the question and uses strong evidence to prove your argument. You must use multiple sources from multiple weeks of the course (i.e. you cannot just use Chapter 26 for this essay or the 9/11 Commission Report). You must use a minimum of four sources, two from the textbook, and two primary sources, but you can use more than four. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Any use of outside sources will result in severe point deductions from the essay’s score. You will need to cite your work in Chicago Manual Style with footnotes and a bibliography at the end of your essay (Hint: your bibliography will consist only of the textbook and primary source readings from the course).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Avoid summarizing/describing the historical period in question. This essay calls for you to write and think analytically.  For example, “The space race impacted U.S. society the most because it….” is analytical.  When writing your essay, think “How does this piece of evidence prove my argument and why did I include it?”
  2. Avoid block/long quotations. A long quote can be summarized so that the necessary evidence remains while also saving you space.
  3. Avoid giving detailed context in the body of your essays. The body of your essay should consist of analysis that explains how/why your evidence proves your argument/thesis statement.
  4. Avoid editorializing in your essays. “This was the most horrible…The greatest period of American history…They were awful,” etc. The essay calls for a more professional style and tone.  You do not need to try and write an overly formal essay, but it should be more formal than your discussion posts.
  5. Avoid turning in your first draft as a final draft. You should proofread your work before its final submission.  If you do not want to reach out to a tutor or to myself for help, you can read your essay out loud to yourself.  Reading your writing out loud can help you catch mistakes, sentence fragments, and other common writing errors.
  6. Avoid unnecessary “filler” just to meet the word and time counts. On the other hand, if you go well past the word and time limits, you will also lose points.
